I did a short post on my blog about this. I’m not a make-up blogger, but this made me think. I’m not sure I have the answers to my own questions, but thought I’d put them out there as part of the discussion.

To Justsayin:
You don’t have to be a beauty blogger to have an opinion on a matter like this. Sure MAC need to take some time out to see where the money should be best spent but the fact of the matter is that offering a % up to charity AFTER receiving a barrage of complaints is effectively too little too late anyway.

@Justsayin You’re absolutely right – it does take a while to sort out where the money will do the most good. That’s why MAC should have thought of it and sorted it out before they released details of this collection, not as a reaction to people’s outrage over it.

FRANK – Perhaps you should go back and read that ‘load of rot’ again before you try having an opinion. MAC had no intention of donation ANY of the proceeds until people kicked up a fuss about it. If you don’t see why naming the products the way they did is offensive well, then there’s really no hope for you. As for ‘throwing notes over the streets’ – once again, if you actually read what I wrote, I never said that. However, there are organisations that have been aware of what has been going on in Juarez for years and have been doing something about it, like Amnesty International. MAC could quite easily come to an agreement with a known organisation like that to donate ALL the proceeds from this misguided collection. But anyway, apprently you’re fine with people profiting from other people’s pain – rock on with that Frank, rock on.

FRANK – I think it’s a little sad that you’ve come on a blog to criticise something you don’t think warrants having an opinion on in the first place but hey, each to their own.

But, what about the Rodarte sisters, the designer team that Mac is collaborating with? Rodarte haven´t said anything at all about these tasteless names, which I think shows a lot of non-existing backbone…

Please don’t get involved in voicing your opinion without at least doing a little research. If you’re looking to get a rise out of a number of women who have truly felt strongly about a cause and decided to speak out on it, then well done to you, you’ve succeeded. But in doing so you’ve only made yourself look like ignorant, cold and heartless.

There’s certainly nothing inherently wrong with deriving inspiration from the less than favourable aspects of society but it’s also important to be sensitive as to how that inspiration might be interpreted in the real world.

This Mac/Rodarte f**kery reminds me of the circa 2000 John Galliano collection that was based on the homeless people the designer would pass by in his neighbourhood. Remember all the models with rats’ nest hair and sooty faces wearing couture gowns made of “newsprint”? *sigh*

I am, however, genuinely surprised that MAC would allow themselves to be a party to such ignorance. This is a company whose AIDS fund and awareness campaigns have made great strides in championing empowerment within a marginalized sector of society. It’s hard to understand how Juarez issue could have come in under the radar.

Here’s hoping that since both MAC and Rodarte have made their “official statements of apology”, they can move towards having something practical and positive come out of this mess.

In my personal opinion I will say MAC goofed, but I will say this I wouldnt blame MAC entirely. Usually when MAC partners up with an outside source (Alexander McQueen, Dsquared2 etc) the partner is usually given almost all creative rights, the way I saw it is that the Rodarte Girls went a lil off the deep end created the names and shades and MAC didnt realize it until it was too late and tried to make it right by saying theyd donate a portion of the proceeds to the city, it seems everyone thinks that “a portion” means a little (im not aware of how much their donating but what if the portion was 80%? thats quite a bit and 20% would cover the cost of production. But all in all I wouldnt blame MAC I would question the Rodarte designers (two sisters from Pasadena CA) and in the future have MAC more involved with the creative process so somthing like this dosnt happen again. Its stuff like this is why errors like this can be made to learn from so not only in the future MAC will be aware but other lines as well thats all I really have to say. Like i said I support Juares and hope justice will one day soon be restored and the victims killers be brought to justice

Yay for armchair activism! Bangs and a Bun has saved the world with a pissy rant from her blog! Hurrah! She has donated a sizable amount of her own money to some unknown charity that is working in Juarez that she didn’t bother to look up! She “frikkin did it!”

Wow. So basically some idiots came on this blog, skimmed the article and then pulled statements out of their arses, attributed them to Bangsy, and high-fived the chips on their shoulders. Nice one peeps.

Bangsy has not only said she’s not an expert on the makeup industry (hello, first line?) but has given HER VIEWS. Yep, HER VIEWS. We’re entitled to those, you know? I thought it gave us non-experts the gist of this whole story, and has followed it up with her own reaction. I don’t see what your problem is. You ranters either work for MAC, OR (the most likely reason) you each have a degree in make-up industry business ethics and are insulted that anyone would dare to have an opinion without consulting you. In which case….

Also, I read the whole article. And digested it. And checked my statements made sense – BEFORE I commented. Try it sometime.

I do see how you can see how Mac messed up in that way. But at the same time you have to understand that by doing this it is bringing more knowledge to the issue and more people are becoming aware of it. Obviously they messed up by saying they would donate a portion to Juarez after everyone one made a big deal out of it but still even if we didn’t get mad at them they still might have after all let’s not forget they’re viva glam line. I for one appreciate the realism of the names in fact I kind of like it. You can hate on me for that but it really does bring Juarez into a light of view in which I would donate or even start/participate in a protest/charity for. Mac may have messed up but in an overview they did something great for Juarez.
