Candle Making with Rachel Vosper
Last week, I was invited to the divine Rachel Vosper shop in Belgravia to try my hand at candle making. Three things made me want to give it a go: 1. Christmas is coming and this is a great gift idea. 2. I do love to get a bit arts n’ crafts every now and then and 3. It’s in Belgravia which is like, well posh innit. So off I went to play with some wax.
I was greeted by the lovely Rachel herself and we cracked straight on with task at hand. She talked me through the various fragrances I could choose from for my own personal candle – each one is like a little slice of heaven in your nostrils, so it’s hard to choose. I went with Rosemary and Mint in the end – it’s got a bit of a kick to it, but then again, so do I, so I thought it was fitting.
We filled trays up with wax (for decorations we would make later) and while waiting for them to cool, got working on my candle. There’s a fine art to it all my friends. Correct wick positioning, pouring the wax just right, allowing time for cooling – it’s a science (albeit an uber fashionable and very darling one, but a science all the same).
While my candle cooled, we made some decorations from the wax we’d left to cool earlier. Feeling all Christmassy, we made reindeer, angels, holly, snowflakes and stars – all the while there was cool music playing in the background and Rachel is a laugh a minute. She makes you feel instantly at ease. Having been in the candle making business for over 17 years, she clearly knows her stuff, but never weighs you down with the knowledge. Though I’d only just met it, it was basically just like having a laugh with a friend. Speaking of which, you can totally do this with friends! Rachel welcomes groups in to make candles and I imagine it’d be a lot of fun to do with your mates.
By the time we’d finished, I had a bag full of delightful smelling Christmas tree decorations plus my own personal scented candle to take home with me. Overall, I had a fantastic afternoon of fun and laughs with some crafts thrown in. I can’t recommend this highly enough in the run up to Christmas – whether you’re looking to make some cool new decorations for your tree, want to make the perfect gift for someone or even treat a loved one to the experience, it’s well worth it.
