Fashion Weeks are loved by many and loathed by some. Let the naysayers yap on about how frivolous and irrelevant it all is, but there’s no denying the influence these shows have on the way we shape our personal style, whether we like to admit it or not. But if you’re someone with an interest in fashion, Fashion Weeks can almost be alienating – how do shows in London, Paris, Milan and New York speak to your experience if you don’t live in any of those cities? Well, the good folks at creative agency Hebe Media in Leeds are putting regional fashion at the forefront this week with the first ever Leeds Digital Fashion Week.

When I first moved back to the UK in 2009, back to Leeds, I was meeting with some cool creative types up there. We would exchange ideas and put the world to rights. One of the people in that group was Shang Ting Peng. Quiet and unassuming, she had moved to Leeds a few months before me from Taiwan, via Barcelona. When I got talking to her, I found she’s super into fashion and works on all sorts of cool projects. She told me she had a Facebook page called UK Observing Diary, where she documents Leeds street style and culture. Pretty cool, I thought. Then she said it had over 120,000 likes and gets millions of hits a month. WHOA! I thought. Shang Ting may just be the most popular blogger we’ve never heard of! UK Observing Diary has such a cult following back in Taiwan that Shang Ting got a book deal. She just recently got back from a month long book tour in Taiwan. I caught up with her to get the skinny.

I love finding a bit of fashion greatness in unexpected places. You know, those bargain fashion finds, that just happen to pop up at the most unexpected of times. My mother and I are huge fans of shopping in dress exchanges – if you’re unfamiliar with the concept, these are basically consignment stores where rich ladies take their designers duds that they no longer want. It just so happens on a mother-daughter day out, we came across this skirt and Lordy Lord, what an incredible fashion find it was.

It’s rare that I write about beauty-related stuff (alright, it’s never that I write about it really), but I love this place so much that I just had to tell you about it. If you’re ever in Leeds and need to be pampered, Shrine is the place to do it.
I first discovered it on my quest to find some place that does Lycon waxing (which thankfully Shrine does). I’m allergic to regular wax and came across Lycon waxing when I lived in Japan. It’s quick and believe it or not (and many people don’t when I say this), it’s painless! It’s a clean, quick and easy technique (that doesn’t bring me out in the terrible rash regular wax does), slightly more expensive than a normal wax and isn’t offered in a multitude of places. So, when I found out Shrine do it, they pretty much had a loyal customer in me instantly.
The treatment room is large and comfortable and the beauty therapists are always super friendly and put you right at ease (we all know the potential for awkwardness that someone faffing around your downstairs department can bring). I’ve always had a thoroughly pleasant experience when I’ve been there.
Tucked away on that stretch of road between Hyde Park and Headingley, it may seem an odd location, but once inside, it really is a sanctuary.
Check out their website to see the range of treatments they offer and let them know I sent you.

I often get asked what I listen to when I’m running and the sweet sounds of Peven Everett flood my ears on a regular basis. He’s soulful, he’s house-y, great melodies, great on the keys and nice uplifting beats – all around just awesome songs. It’s nice to break up a running playlist that consists of some Prodigy and some Swedish House Mafia with something a little more soulful, in case you get a little too aggressive!
So, given my love of the sweet sounds of Mr Peven Everett, imagine how excited I was when a friend told me the man himself will be performing in Leeds! Yes, flying in from Chicago for his first ever Leeds gig. That is the very definition of AMAZEBALLS!
Many UK Garage heads will know him from his hit ‘Gabriel’ which closed out pretty much every Garage rave going back in the day. So basically, if you live in Leeds, or pretty much anywhere in the north of England, you should get your ass to this gig. It’s gonna be a special night.
